Buyer’s guide: How to choose the best chalk line

How to strip wire fast
How to strip wire fast

When looking to purchase a chalk line, these are some of the features that need to be considered to help you get one that will suit your particular needs best.

String quality

You need a chalk line that comes with a strong string that can make crisp clear lines and doesn’t break easily when it is stretched tightly across a rough surface.

Look for a chalk line that has nylon string which is much stronger than cotton string. Also, consider if you want thin or bold lines so you can determine if you need a thin or thick string.

The length of line you choose depends on the type of jobs you will be doing — if you’re using the chalk box for professional, or DIY projects.

If you are a professional, then you need a longer line so you can cover a larger surface and work on bigger projects.

Lines of about 100 feet will do. For small-scale projects, a line of around 50 feet is adequate.

Hook

The hook is important when there isn’t a second person to help hold the line and keep it taut.

The hook needs to be strong and secure so it can hold the line tight, without slipping.

Case quality

The case should be made of high-quality material such as hardened plastic or rust-resistant metal.

The benefit of hardened plastic is that it can be exposed to a wet or muddy environment without rusting.

Metal cases can be durable if used in a cool and dry environment. A clear case is convenient for seeing how much chalk powder is left in the box.

Chalk capacity and refilling

Be sure to choose a chalk box with a sufficient chalk holding capacity so you don’t have to take multiple breaks to refill it.

A chalk box that can hold at least 10 ounces of chalk is necessary for construction work but make sure it is not too bulky to fit comfortably in the hand.

Manual or gear driven

A manual chalk line features a spool that holds a chalk line and a crank lever for winding or unwinding the chalk line.

One revolution of the crank gives you one revolution of the chalk line, so you need to keep cranking the lever until you get the desired length.

The advantage of a manual chalk line is that it’s inexpensive and simple to use, but it can be tiring, especially if you are working with a long line.

A gear-driven or automatic chalk line has a system of gears that help you roll out the chalk line smoothly and quickly.

It has a crank lever for reeling back the string, but it rolls in more string per crank revolution than a manual chalk box.

Some automatic chalk lines have a locking mechanism that keeps the line steady as you pluck it.

Color is crucial

Black, red, yellow, orange, green, and fluorescent chalk colors are highly visible and contrast well on almost all surfaces and materials. However, these colors cannot easily be removed once applied.

Generally, these permanent chalks are used outdoors and are designed to stand up to the elements. They should only be used on surfaces that will be covered once construction is complete.

Blue and white chalks are the best for general, everyday use.

The blue and white chalk powders are not permanent and are easily removed, except on very porous surfaces like concrete, where a bit of elbow grease may be required.

Blue is easily visible on most surfaces, wood, plastic, and metal but white is the best chalk color for very dark surfaces.

White is usually considered the best chalk for indoor use as it is the least permanent and is not visible under any painting or decorating.

This is the first choice for most chalk box owners as it is easy to source, use, and cover once a job has been completed.

Color also is crucial when it comes to hard hats, check out my Hard Hat Color Code and Type guide for the ins and outs

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Let’s finish off by answering some common questions about chalk lines.

What is a chalk line?

A chalk line is a tool for marking long, straight lines on relatively flat surfaces, much farther than is possible by hand or with a straightedge.

How do you use a chalk line?

A chalk line is used to determine straight lines between two points, or vertical lines by using the weight of the line reel as a plumb line.

The coiled nylon string, coated in colored chalk, is pulled out of the case, laid across the surface to be marked, and then pulled tight.

The string is then plucked or snapped sharply, causing it to strike the surface and transfer the chalk onto the surface where it struck.

This line may be temporary or permanent, depending on the color and composition of the chalk.

What does a chalk line look like?

A chalk line, chalk reel, or chalk box is a metal or plastic case which contains powdered chalk and an 18 to 50 foot coil of string, usually made of nylon.

A hook ring is on the outside at the end of the string. A rewind crank is located on the side of the tool to wind the line into the case when the job is complete.

The case typically has one pointed end so that it also can be used as a plumb line.

If the chalk line is refillable, it will have a cap that can be removed to fill the case with more chalk.

How do you refill a chalk line?

How to refill a chalk line

Some require you to unscrew the lid where the line comes through to put more chalk into the reel, some have side hatches for refilling.

Fill the chalk box about halfway with powdered chalk from a squeeze bottle. Tap the chalk box occasionally to settle the chalk.

Tip: before you start refilling the chalk line, pull out the string about halfway. This gives you more space for the chalk in the case and will really cover the line when pulling it back in.

You’ll have a choice of red, black, blue, white, or fluorescent (orange, yellow, and green) chalk. Fill your chalk box with blue chalk for general use.

Some chalk lines have transparent panes that allow you to see how much chalk is left.

Are chalk lines erasable?

Not all chalk lines can be easily removed.

Chalks for construction and building come in different colors with different uses and qualities:

  • Light violet: removable lines (indoors)
  • Blue and white: standard (both indoors and outdoors)
  • Orange, yellow, and green: semi-permanent for high visibility (outdoors)
  • Red and black: permanent lines (outdoors)

What color chalk line should be used for concrete?

Blue chalk is easy to see on asphalt, seal coat, and concrete pavement, but perhaps most importantly, you are almost guaranteed not to confuse it with messy paint markings.

How to remove a chalk line

Light violet, blue and white chalks are fairly easy to remove and often don’t need more than a light scrubbing with a toothbrush and some diluted dishwashing liquid.

A solution of water and vinegar also works well.

All other chalk lines (red, black, orange, yellow, green, and fluorescent) are very difficult, if not impossible to remove.

How accurate is a chalk line?

A chalk line, held tautly and snapped onto a surface, will mark a perfectly straight line — up to a point. Beyond 16 feet or so, it’s difficult to get the string tight enough to snap a crisp, accurate line.

How do you make sure your chalk line is straight?

To ensure that your line is totally straight, the chalk line itself needs to be pulled tight.

To ensure it stays tight you will need something to either hold the hook end on your mark, use the claw on the hook itself to pull against, or hook the actual hook over something.

How can you replace the reels on a chalk line?

First, open the box to remove the old string line and reel, remove the hook from the end of the string, attach a new string line to the reel, ravel the excess string around and finally replace the reel.

Conclusion

Whether you are a hobbyist, DIYer, or a professional working in construction, you will be more aware of the products on the market, and their features. You should be in a position to choose a chalk line that best suits your needs.
